America has taken an important step towards becoming a true democracy. A not-very-advanced country (to put it mildly), which abolished slavery later than the Russian Empire abolished serfdom, will at long last get a black president. Indeed, it has come a long way from Uncle Tom’s Cabin to Barack Obama! Civil War veterans from the southern states can turn over in their graves as much as they want. Perhaps they could have imagined African-Americans not on a plantation, freely walking around cotton fields with a bottle of whiskey, but one in charge of the White House – never!
No, it hasn’t been for anything that the U.S. has terrorized itself with political correctness. And this is just the beginning! I believe that from now on, it will be a long time until the leader of the dominant superpower will once again be a white Christian heterosexual man like the warrior McCain who scares the easily-frightened with his old scars from Vietnam. Americans, you need to be consistent! The whole world is watching you with bated breath! After Obama, we expect the new president in Washington to be: a woman, then a homosexual, then a Native American from a reservation, and finally a Muslim. If the United States is truly a modern country, it should let all those oppressed groups rule them, rather than just talk about their rights. And first of all, it should withdraw its troops from Iraq.
I learned with a deep sense of satisfaction that Victor Yushchenko already had time to congratulate Obama. At least here he demonstrated effectiveness! “I wish you, Your High Excellency,” the president of Ukraine wrote in his message, “good health and success in your critical governmental activity for the welfare of the people of the United States.”
However, the “welfare” of the American people does not always coincide with the welfare of Ukrainians. No matter who lives in the White House, it’s not him, but rather the people who nominated him that are the true masters of this “bungalow.” As with Bush, and now under the leadership of Obama, the U.S. will continue to sharpen Ukraine into the shape of a stake to use against Russia. American presidents may even change their skin, but not their policy.
