What Will Bin Laden Think?

There is absolutely no doubt that Osama Bin Laden witnessed it live when Barack Obama was sworn in on the Bible. The nefarious Muslims are well-informed when it comes to new technology and the leader of al-Qaeda probably has access to CNN as well as a good connection to the Internet in his comfortable hideout, whether he is hiding in a mountain cave in Afghanistan or a luxurious cottage in Peshawar.

I am also convinced that he took the speech of the new president of the United States like a shot to the groin.

The bad guys are not usually duped. They hate the West and everything it represents, especially freedom, and they don’t give a damn whether or not the object of their resentment has white, black or latte-colored skin.

The fanatics of Allah are voracious consumers of satellite television; the possibility cannot be ruled out that the downpour of favorable comments that progressives worldwide have dedicated to Barack Obama in the past months has made the bad guys believe that a compassionate advocate of the Alliance of Civilizations has arrived to the White House.

What a crass error. A quick review of the speech given on Tuesday by Obama on the staircase of the Capitol is enough to indicate that a bright future is not in store for al-Qaeda.

A democratic society cannot fold to terrorist threats. It must remain faithful to its principles, otherwise it risks degradation. In practice, however, it isn’t abnormal for politicians of different types to look for shortcuts, loopholes or shady deals. This, of course, only after solemnly professing empty words and claiming that it is all about the “search for peace.”

Obama has made it clear that he is not of this class. He is going to close Guantanamo, but has emphasized that the U.S. is at war against a far-reaching network of violence and hate, that he will not apologize for his way of life, that he will not hesitate at the hour of defending it and that he is willing to endure. The message is unmistakable.

If I were Bin Laden, I’d be worried.
