United States: Fighting Sprit Intact

They do not admit defeat. The United States is unique in that its economic fabric is composed of combative entrepreneurs who are proud of belonging to their nation. In their rivalry with China, they demonstrate a determination that is sometimes excessive, but also the envy of many. Many of them understand that to re-enchant the American dream we must first awaken industries.

The United States is still one of the top powers of the world – no offense to those who see in this country a stranglehold on the decline. However, since the crisis, the economy has never been as good as it was when the outgoing president’s mandate was issued.

The efforts have paid off. American growth has restarted, unemployment fell and consumer confidence is at its highest in five years. Some would argue that this is not enough and that the numbers have been manipulated. Recall, however, that the United States has come a long way. The 2008 crisis has left deep scars on its economic landscape. But the country of Uncle Sam is now climbing back up the hill, beyond the shear of its ascent.

America has stubborn forces, whose obsession with finding work for all is estimable. This is reinforced by the fact that individuals believe in themselves and their commercial capacities, in a society that values success. In the United States, one is rarely satisfied with second place. One must always aim higher. Achieving one’s goals sometimes involves taking as many risks as necessary. But Americans have this confidence.

Republicans and Democrats will vote with their wallets in mind. This is why they should be concerned about the huge indebtedness of the country. After November 6, Congress will need to seize the fiscal year-end deadline without delay. They must be sure to avoid having their fighting spirit, limited to the absurd, lead the United States to default.
