Trump, in all his incarnations — property magnate, playboy, reality TV star, and now president — needs the abject and absolute fealty of his inner circle to threaten, humiliate or buy the silence of adversaries. And those defences are crumbling.
American democracy can in fact advance without a strong president. It can’t advance, however, without well-defined interests that are clearly presented to the electorate and defended legitimately.
If the Democrats have a chance of overthrowing the billionaire, it’s at the ballot box rather than in court.
So what we’ve really learned this week is that Mr. Trump has surrounded himself with a sleazy gang of grifters and con men, and ordinary Americans don’t care. And why should they?
