Washington Trips Into Iran's Lebanese Trap

Happy coincidences don't exist in the Middle East. The Israeli operation in Lebanon has the full backing of the United States, which opposes a cease-fire in spite of the growing number of civilian victims, and which is accelerating deliveries of weapons to the Hebrew State. As for Hezbollah and Hamas, the authors of what has provoked the present crisis, they are under orders from Iran, with Syria as intermediary due to its geographical proximity.

Tehran furnishes its Shiite brethren in Hezbollah missiles, which are manufactured in about ten factories spread around the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf. Iran designed the guidance systems of these missiles - they are not elementary rockets - for the energetic combatants of the "party of God [Hezbullah]." Even Israeli soldiers admit that these activists don't conduct themselves like "vulgar" militiamen, but rather like Special Forces troops that understand their responsibilities "perfectly."

Why this Iranian adventurism, which shouldn't surprise us because Tehran's objectives are showcased in all of President Ahmadinejad's boisterous pronouncements? Is it to make us forget the crisis in regard to Iran's uranium enrichment? Unnecessary, since the West has already capitulated and doesn't believe there is any coercion that would prevent Iran from achieving an atomic weapon.

The new wager of Iran's mullahs is on Iraq, where the United States has lost its footing. Day after day, Tehran extends its influence among the majority Shiite population, to the point that now it's even capable of forcing the Baghdad government to take action against Iranian opposition groups that have taken refuge in Iraq, despite the fact that Iraq is under American supervision.

Next, with Iraq as a platform, it is Tehran's ambition to emerge as the leader of the Muslim world. Israel, which Ahmadinejad has dedicated himself to destroying, is being used as a catalyst to unite Shiites and Sunnis, despite the thousand-year-old battle that the two branches of Islam are engaged in. In this context, the Lebanese, Palestinians and Israelis are merely pawns on a much larger chessboard.

For this reason, a failure to stop this latest Middle East war, even at the price of a precarious peace to be consolidated later, will amount to falling into the Iranian trap and guarantee a much-prolonged conflict. This is to say nothing of the disastrous image that Israel is forging by raining bombs onto the Christian neighborhoods of Beirut. These bombs, which almost exclusively kill civilians and destroy the country's industrial infrastructure, manufacture new hatred as well ...

Le piège iranien

Les coïncidences fortuites n'existent pas au Proche-Orient. L'opération israélienne au Liban a le plein aval des Etats-Unis qui s'opposent à un cessez-le-feu, malgré le nombre croissant des victimes civiles, et accélèrent leurs livraisons d'armes à l'Etat hébreu. Quant au Hezbollah et au Hamas, signataires des provocations à l'origine de la crise, ils sont aux ordres de l'Iran, avec la Syrie pour relais, proximité géographique oblige.

Téhéran fournit aux frères chiites du Hezbollah les missiles fabriqués dans une dizaine d'usines disséminées de la mer Caspienne au golfe Persique. L'Iran a formé les serveurs de ces engins - ce ne sont pas de simples roquettes - et a entraîné les combattants du «parti de Dieu». De l'aveu même des militaires israéliens, ces activistes ne se comportent pas sur le terrain comme de «vulgaires» miliciens, plutôt comme des membres de forces spéciales connaissant parfaitement leur «métier».

Pourquoi cet aventurisme iranien qui pourtant ne devrait pas surprendre, car les objectifs de Téhéran figurent dans toutes les vociférations du président Ahmadinejad? Pour faire oublier la crise autour de l'enrichissement d'uranium? Inutile, l'Occident a déjà capitulé puisqu'il n'envisage aucune coercition pour empêcher l'Iran d'accéder à l'arme atomique.

Le nouvel enjeu des mollahs est l'Irak où les Etats-Unis perdent pied. Jour après jour, Téhéran étend un peu plus son influence parmi la population chiite majoritaire, au point même de pouvoir contraindre le gouvernement de Bagdad, pourtant sous tutelle américaine, à prendre des mesures contre l'opposition iranienne réfugiée en Irak.

 Ensuite, avec l'Irak pour plate-forme, l'ambition de Téhéran est de se hisser à la tête du monde musulman. Israël, qu'Ahmadinejad voue à la destruction, sert de catalyseur entre chiites et sunnites, malgré la lutte millénaire que se livrent les deux branches de l'islam. Dans ce contexte, les Libanais, les Palestiniens et les Israéliens ne sont que des pions sur un échiquier beaucoup plus grand.

Voilà pourquoi ne pas arrêter la nouvelle guerre du Proche-Orient, même au prix d'une paix précaire à consolider plus tard, revient à tomber dans le piège iranien avec une extension garantie du conflit. Sans oublier qu'Israël se forge une image désastreuse en déversant ses bombes jusque dans les quartiers chrétiens de Beyrouth. Ces bombes qui tuent presque exclusivement des civils et détruisent un pays industrieux mais fabriquent si bien de nouvelles haines...
