Mexico City: The representative of the United States to Miss Universe 2007, Rachel Smith, who was booed last Sunday during the traditional parade of swimsuits, today downplayed the importance of the incident and said such a reaction should be directed at "someone more important" than her WATCH .

"If I were in politics or had to do with some sports competition, I would understand.  It's sad that this has happened, but I think I knew how to handle it," Smith said in an interview.

The beauty queen, adorned with a suit and holding a guitar in the style of The King of Rock, her deceased compatriot Elvis Presley, showed no sign of irritation when the crowd began to boo and hiss as she paraded down the catwalk, set up near the Mexican Capital's Angel of Independence .

"The best I can do is comport myself like a lady, show my pride and my femininity, and represent my country to the best of my ability" she explained.

Afterward the swimsuit competition, Smith emphasized that the Miss Universe contest has nothing to do with politics.

"I'm not here to be my country's next Secretary of State," she said.

The young woman also emphasized that she has always had a favorable opinion of the Mexicans, a people that has always been very kind to her and with which the United States  shares a border over 3,200 kilometers long [1988 miles].

Every year, over half a million people cross that border in search of better living conditions in the United States, a flow of people that Washington intends to stop with the construction of new border walls.

"I've traveled some five times to Mexico on vacations with my family. I love Mexico City, and Cancun is wonderful," Smith revealed.

For the final segment of the Miss Universe contest, which is planned for Monday the 28th at the National Auditorium [in Mexico City], the representative of the United States affirmed that she would do everything possible to obtain the crown.
