'Iraqis are Not a Herd of Beasts!'

“The number of Iraqis killed in this savage war is now multiple times more than the number of Japanese killed in the nuclear bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima.”

What we see and hear about Iraq is nothing compared to what is really going on. Despite a powerful will to survive, Iraq has become a palace for martyrs, and its soil is drenched with their blood.

Are we to believe that Iraq's losses have exceeded 654,000 dead in the past three and a half years (meaning one dead every 3 minutes, or 20 dead every hour)? Is it conceivable that such a staggering number of human beings could have fallen since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein's regime in 2003? Is it even possible to imagine the enormity of killing such a huge number of innocent Iraqi civilians, including women, children and the aged?

According to a study published by a science team from America's Johns Hopkins University in the medical journal The Lancet, Iraqis are dying at a per capita rate not seen throughout history ! A human being cannot even conceive of such a sea of blood. And with the media blackout in many areas and cities, much of what actually occurs remains concealed.

[Editor's Note: The Lancet is one of the oldest and most respected peer-reviewed medical journals in the world, and was founded in 1823 ].

The problem is that international organizations have cast doubt on the credibility of the numbers, including Human Rights Watch in the United States and some researchers, activists and observers. And perhaps we too could question the numbers, but even if we convince ourselves that the number is a half or a quarter of this figure [654,000], it is such a tremendous number that we cannot remain silent.

[Editor's Note: The author is mistaken about Human Rights Watch. The group's spokesman said, "We have no reason to question the findings or the accuracy of the survey." The projection says that number of excess deaths can be said, with 95 percent confidence, to range between 393,000 and 943,000. It said that 92 percent of the excess deaths were from violence, mainly gunfire, but also explosions. By way of comparison, Human Rights Watch estimates that Saddam Hussein's regime killed 250,000 to 290,000 people over 20 years].

We wish the Iraqi government would publish the names and identities of all the victims and the regions in which they were killed, and that the Health Ministry and offices issuing death certificates publish the personal information on the victims and what their causes if death were.

Every shred of information on these deaths needs to be published, from those that were part of domestic violence to those caused by execution, kidnapping, booby trapping and controlled explosions, along with those committed through torture and beheading!

Al Yarmuk hospital in Baghdad releases 200 death certificates per day, or 6000 death certificates per month. Knowing that there are four other hospitals in Baghdad that are just as busy as Al Yarmuk, how are we to imagine the scale of the catastrophe in the rest of the country? Can we doubt that the number of Iraqi victims is a huge one?

The magnitude of the tragedy now afflicting our Iraqi people exceeds our worst fears, and whatever the cost, a way to stop this hemorrhaging of human life must be found. Nor can the world remain silent when confronted by this terrible chapter in its history.

We reject the characterization of these events as a civil war; this is certainly not a genuine civil conflict. In this marathon of war, the majority of Iraqis don't participate and are preyed upon. Most Iraqis have not joined death squads! These crimes are committed by gangs of criminals, perverts, killers and assassins. These are acts committed against the Iraqi people and are beyond description. The great society of Iraq is at the mercy of those without mercy.

The world's people should recognize the Iraqi catastrophe and not delude themselves into forgetting that our noble people have fallen victim to international and regional interests.

The numbers published by The Lancet are staggering, and should galvanize all of those who wish to see Iraq survive. To stand in silence is to ignore those who day and night are being killed like flies. A colleague of mine has written that the number of Iraqis killed in this savage war is now multiple times more than the number of Japanese killed at the end of World War II in the nuclear bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. The entire world sympathized with the Japanese, but today, few care about the fate of the Iraqis. Even if President George Bush doubts the credibility of the numbers, they didn't appear out of the void. The report was produced by a team that willingly risked their collective lives to go into neighborhoods across Iraq to question thousands of families.

I can say that many of those killed every day are never disclosed. The innocent Iraqi people falling like leaves from trees are human beings, not a herd of beasts! There is nothing but silence from the Arabs, and a total Islamic political and media blackout! Trapped under an oppressive occupation with sectarian parties, a weak government, murderous gangs and covert death squads, Iraqis have no one to turn to. I appeal to all people of conscience, whether in or out of the country, to stand up against what is happening to Iraqis.

The rivers of blood and this destructive and seemingly endless war must be ended! One cannot remain silent when confronted with the forced displacement and social chaos created by entire regions cleared of the indigenous population, and the mass migration of Iraqis to neighboring countries.

The violent waves that are hitting Iraqis from every direction cannot go on. Iraq is like a ship caught in a hurricane and struggling to remain intact.

Iraq cannot be rejuvenated by killing its people, dividing it up, and forcing the remaining population into exile. Whoever is plotting a course to a new Iraq must find effective ways to address these trends, because such a road map cannot be drawn while the nation is immersed in a sea of blood and over the dead bodies of Iraqis.

To all of those who hear my voice, I beg you to echo my words. For the sake of the beautiful and very ancient country of Iraq … may its greatness suffice to meet these challenges. Iraq is full of martyrs and its soil has been drenched with their pure blood.

العراقيون يتساقطون مثل أوراق الشجر!!

إن ما نسمعه أو نشاهده عن العراق هو قليل جدا قياسا لما يحدث هناك ، فلقد غدا العراق بلاطا للشهداء ، وترابا مضرجا بالدماء مع إرادة قوية للعراقيين على البقاء . هل يصدق المرء أن يفقد العراق ما تجاوز على 655 ألف قتيل في غضون ثلاث سنوات ونصف السنة ( أي : بواقع قتيل كل 3 دقائق و20 قتيلا كل ساعة ) ؟ هل يعقل أن يتساقط هذا الحجم المهول من البشر منذ الإطاحة بنظام صدام حسين عام 2003 ؟ هل يمكن للمرء أن يستوعب سقوط هذا العدد الهائل من المدنيين والأبرياء العراقيين نسوة وشيبا وشبانا وأطفالا ؟ وحسب الدراسة التي قام بها فريق علمي أرسلته جامعة جونز هوبكنز الأمريكية إلى العراق ، فان معدل ما سقط من البشر يفوق في نسبته أي حالة أخرى في التاريخ ! إذا لا يمكن للإنسان أن يتخّيل هذا البحر من الدماء ، خصوصا إذا علمنا أن كل ما يحدث في العراق لا يعلن على الملأ ، وثمة تعتيم كامل على مناطق ومدن معينة .. والمشكلة أن منظمات دولية قد تشكّك في مصداقية الأرقام ، مثل منظمة هيومان ووتش رايتس الامريكية ، فضلا عن باحثين ونشطاء ومراقبين .. وربما نشكك ايضا ، ولكن حتى لو اقنعنا انفسنا بنصف هذا العدد او ربعه ، فان النسبة تبقى عالية جدا لا يمكن السكوت عنها ابدا .

وكم نوّد من الحكومة العراقية أن تعلن عن أسماء كل ضحايا العراق وهوياتهم ومناطق قتلهم ، وان تقوم وزارة الصحة العراقية ودوائر منح شهادات الوفيات بإعلان كل المعلومات الشخصية للضحايا مهما كان السبب .. وينبغي معرفة كل من ذهب ضحية هذا العنف الداخلي وإشهار كل المعلومات عن الذين قاموا بأعمال القتل والاعدام والخطف والتفخيخ والتفجير عن بعد والتعذيب وقطع الرؤوس ! وإذا علمنا بأن مستشفى اليرموك ببغداد يصدر 200 شهادة وفاة يوميا ، أي 6000 شهادة وفاة شهريا ، فكيف نتخّيل إذن حجم المأساة في عموم العراق ، علما بأن هناك أربع مستشفيات تقوم بنفس العمل الذي تقوم به اليرموك وحدها ، فهل يمكننا الاقتناع بأن ضحايا العراق لم يتجاوز عددهم كثيرا ؟

ان حجم المأساة التي تلم بأهلنا العراقيين قد فاقت كل التصّورات ، وان هذا النزيف البشري غير المتوقف لابد من إيجاد أية علاجات لإيقافه مهما كانت الأثمان .. ولا يمكن أن يبقى العالم كله صامتا على كل الفصول المأساوية ، ونرفض تسّمية ما يجري حتى الآن بالحرب الأهلية ، لأنها ليست أهلية حقيقية ، وان الأبرياء العزل غير مشتركين في أي ماراثون للحرب ، ولم يتحّول كل العراقيين الى جماعات موت ! قياسا لما تفعله العصابات وما يقترفه المجرمون وما يمارسه شذاذ الآفاق والقتلة والمرتزقة من فرق الموت المجهولة بالمجتمع العراقي .. إنها أعمال تفوق التصورات، فلقد غدا هذا المجتمع الصلب تحت وطأة من لا يرحمه !
ينبغي على كل العالم أن يعترف بكارثة العراقيين ، إذ لا ينبغي أن نكذب على أنفسنا متناسين شعبا عريقا يغدو ضحية بأيدي من له مصالح دولية أو إقليمية أو داخلية . إن مانشرته مجلة لانست الطبية البريطانية من أرقام مذهلة لابد أن يقف إزاءها كل من يريد إسكات هذا الطوفان في العراق .. إن التزام الصمت المطبق لا يفيد أبدا ، وكأن الذين يتساقطون ليلا ونهارا هم أشبه بذباب ! لقد كتب احد الزملاء أن عدد الضحايا من العراقيين في هذه الحرب المتوحشة بلغ حتى الآن ضعف نظرائهم اليابانيين الذين سقطوا جراء تأثير القنابل النووية في هيروشيما وناغازاكي عند نهاية الحرب الثانية .. ولكن العالم كله تعاطف مع اليابانيين في حين لم يتعاطف أحد حتى اليوم مع العراقيين ! وحتّى إن شكك الرئيس جورج بوش بالأرقام المعلنة ومصداقيتها ، فان الأرقام لم تأت من فراغ ، إذ أنها حصيلة جهد فريق عمل خاطر بحياته في أعماق العراق وقابل آلاف الأسر هناك .
استطيع القول ، إن العراقيين فقدوا كثيرا من نفوسهم جراء ما لم يكشف عنه يوميا .. إن الأبرياء يتساقطون في العراق مثل أوراق الشجر ، وهم بشر من الأسوياء العقلاء وليسوا قطيعا من البهائم ! إنني أناشد كل صاحب ضمير حي في هذا الوجود أن يصرخ ضد ما يتعّرض له كل العراقيين ، وان يعمل الجميع من اجل أي علاج داخلي أو عربي او إقليمي أو دولي .. وان تدوي صرخات كل شعوب العالم وان لا يبقى الحال على ما هو عليه مع صمت عربي وإسلامي سياسي وإعلامي مطبق ! إن العراقيين لا يمكنهم البقاء في رهان يستحيل تحقيقه في ظل احتلال بغيض وأحزاب طائفية وحكومة ضعيفة وعصابات قاتلة وجماعات ماكرة وفرق موت خفية .. لا يمكن أن تستمر شطوط الدم وحرب كسيحة لا حسم لها ! لا يمكن الصمت على التهجير القسري والنفير الاجتماعي للهروب وإفراغ مناطق من سكانها الأصليين وهجرة العراقيين إلى دول مجاورة .. لا يمكن أن تستمر هذه الموجات الهوجاء التي تطال العراق من كل مكان وهو أشبه بسفينة تتفكك ولكنها لم تزل تقاوم هذا الإعصار .. لا يمكن للعراق أن يبقى أرضا يبابا بلا شجر .. لا يمكن أن تتقّطع أوصاله الجغرافية بعد تقتيل سكانه وتهجيرهم .. ينبغي على من يرسم له طريقه اليوم باسم العراق الجديد أن يجد الحلول الناجعة لإيقاف هذا الطوفان ، فلا يمكن أن ترسم خريطة طريق للعراق وهو يخوض في بحر من الدماء ويمشي فوق أجساد العراقيين ظلما وعدوانا !

لكل من يسمع صوتي يتهادى في الآفاق .. ارجوه أن يردد معي صداه من اجل وطن جميل جدا وعريق جدا اسمه العراق .. ويكفي العراقيين كل هذه التحديات ، فلقد ازدحمت بلادهم بالشهداء وتشربّ ترابهم بأزكى الدماء
