Bitter Fruit: Bush is Given 'Taste of His Own Medicine'
“Now the Democrats will meet each and every suggestion from the President with naked bayonets, and he will either have to make some painful concessions or wear out his veto stamp.”

The fact
that George Bush's latest State of the Nation address would be received negatively
was a foregone conclusion long before the U.S. President stepped onto the
rostrum. After all, the President had made no secret of his intent to implement
a new Iraq strategy that has attracted criticism from the Democrats who now hold
a majority in both houses of Congress.
But the
reaction of the Congressional majority exceeded all expectations. Democrats rejected
President Bush's speech before his address was over. Speaking on behalf of the
Democratic majority after Bush's address, Senator James Webb gave a devastating
response that appeared to have been prepared well ahead of the President's
speech .
The
negative reaction is not because Democrats categorically disagree with every
single point of Mr. Bush's speech. Far from it. Many Democrats
understand that the immediate withdrawal of American troops from Iraq would be tantamount
to catastrophe. It is equally unrealistic to talk of a quick redeployment to
neighboring Afghanistan, as proposed, for example, by Hillary Clinton.
The
Democrats also understand that the contingent of American soldiers in Iraq, as
it stands, cannot hope to change the situation in the country. Therefore, George
Bush's proposal to send an additional 21,000 soldiers appears at least logical.
The
Democratic Congressional majority also must recognize the infeasibility of a suggestion
of the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Joseph Biden, on partitioning
of Iraq into three parts. Indeed, Mr. Biden himself has publicly admitted that
the war in Iraq will last longer than the term of the current Republican administration.
And
finally, the Democrats had to have at least some sympathy for Mr. Bush's
proposal to cut America's oil consumption by 20 percent over the next ten
years. Starting with Richard Nixon, almost every president since Richard Nixon
has insisted that America must significantly reduce its energy dependence.
What the
Democrats are doing by rejecting every idea in the President's speech is
exacting revenge against the White House for the way the administration treated
them during Mr. Bush's time in power. He and his team have practically made it
a policy to disregard the views of the opposition. At a recent hearing of the
House Foreign Affairs Committee, one of the Democrats interrupted objections
from an outraged Republican colleague by snapping, "Get used to being in the
minority!"
Today the
Democrats are giving the President a dose of the same medicine he forced down
their throats before they took over Congress. Mr. Bush's proposal to create a
council on the war on terror that would include leaders of Congress is clearly
overdue ... But now the Democrats will meet each and every suggestion from the President
with naked bayonets, and he will either have to make some painful concessions
or wear out his veto stamp. When he had the opportunity to work together with
the opposition, the President decided not to. And now that decision is bearing
bitter its fruit.
