North Koreans Celebrate 'Victory' Over the United States

To celebrate the 52nd anniversary of 'Victory in the Great Fatherland Liberation War, performances of songs such as The Song of General Kim Il Sung were held in Pyongyang on Monday. The victory is said to have occurred on July 27, 1953, at the signing of the Korean War Armistice Agreement. No explanation is given as to why the celebrations were held on July 25.

Pyongyang: On Monday, a performance of wartime songs entitled, "Eternal Song of Victory of Songun" [Songun is the political philosophy of Kim Jong-il] was performed by war veterans from across the country in Pyongyang to celebrate the 52nd anniversary of Victory in the Great Fatherland Liberation War (July 27, 1953). It was appreciated by Kim Yong-nam, Kim Il-chol, Kim Jung-rin and other senior officials and working people.

The performances, which included the singing of, “The Song of General Kim Il Sung," was by a men's chorus and a mixed chorus, there was a frontline recreation party held, there was true-story telling, and there was singing with drums.

The performers truthfully expressed the spirit of being devoted to defending the country. The performers were filled with revolutionary optimism, just as those in the Korean People's Army who devoted their youth and their lives to the Party, its leader, the country and its people during the war.

Also on Monday, a series of lectures was held on, "July 27, A Day of Victory to Be Remembered Always " was held by young people and students at the Central Youth Hall in Pyongyang.

At the meeting, students recited the commemorative poem, "July 27, Day of Victory" to be followed by speeches on, "The Iron-Willed Brilliant Commander," "The Army and National Flag," "The Country Blessed by Songun" and "Our Life."

The performers said in an excited tone that the Korean people could become a dignified and proud people after having defeated two ferocious imperialisms [the first being the Japanese]. All thanks to the outstanding military thinking and leadership of President Kim Il-Sung, who made the U.S. imperialists sink like the setting sun after they had boasted of being "the strongest" in the world.

Also performed by a men's chorus was, "The Song of National Defense" by war veterans. The song "General of Korea" and some others were performed by male students.

Agricultural workers also held a meeting, in front of the Jonsung Revolutionary Museum.
