Sino-American scholars who published “Addressing U.S.-China Strategic Distrust” point out that America’s arms sales to Taiwan, as well as reconnaissance of China, deepens Beijing’s distrust in America’s strategic intentions. This publication is written by scholars who are familiar with such issues as Sino-American hierarchy and diplomatic and military affairs, and is presented in the form of “narratives” whereby each coauthor narrates “his government’s views without any changes made by the other coauthor.” Media reports that this narrative has received a high degree of attention from the public.
The U.S. has to avoid hedging, for China is not a bet for America but a steadfast partner with which the U.S. can cooperate. At the same time, the U.S. needs to avoid traditional Western hegemony and respect the “non-Western operations” of the world instead.
