United States President Obama is coming to Germany again in June, but he is staying out of Germany’s federal elections. Instead he is planning a private trip to Dresden and to the Buchenwald memorial. He seems to be intentionally avoiding an official state visit with Angela Merkel.
America did not want to only fight terrorism. It also wanted to strike the vile, avenge the dead and show that no one can challenge its power with impunity. The death of bin Laden does not give back her children, but it settles a score in her heart, in the biblical sense of justice, an important part of the country.
The rescue missions by the United States government, which put millions of “public” dollars at risk to save the banks while unemployment was growing and the economy was sliding into a recession, hurt the average citizen’s belief in the “American Dream.”
