No One Is above the Law — Charge Donald Trump!

After Joe Biden’s election, Donald Trump tried to overturn the will of the people many times — to the extent it led to the Capitol attack. The former president must be tried for the attack. Otherwise, we may as well give up on both democracy and the rule of law.

“Today, we had an election and I won!”* Donald Trump wrote three days before the 2020 U.S. presidential election. It was part of his “victory speech.” Trump stuck to his claim, and to this day, still claims that only he could have won that election.

This is how losers look. The House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol has explained in meticulous detail how Trump tried everything he could to overturn the election result. The mediocre real estate tycoon with inherited wealth and charismatic presence continues to convey the strange appearance of having won in parts of the U.S. Trump’s supporters parrot their idol’s slogan, “Trump won.” When Trump called on his supporters, many of whom were violent, to stop their attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 — albeit late in the event — they went along with him even then.

The House Select Committee has proven extensively through Republican witness testimony how the former president who was voted out of office clung to power at any cost. People close to Trump and staff in the Trump White House described the Trump’s actions as those of a would-be autocrat.

So now it is only fitting that the Select Committee invite Trump to testify under oath — even if it is unlikely that he will do so. Trump and those who back him up like to imitate strong men and do so loudly. When it comes to their own cases, however, they grown quiet and turn to a right against self-incrimination. The rule of law also exists for those who flout it.

Trump Has Undermined the Constitution

It would be much more important to indict Trump than to interrogate him. It has been clear for a long time that Trump undermined the Constitution. Despite knowing better, he tried repeatedly to overturn the will of the people in electing Biden president. It is now high time to hold Trump legally accountable for this, and not just prosecute him for tax fraud.

Would charging Trump split the U.S. apart? Would charging Trump lead to civil war? Anyone who believes this has already given up on the country, on democracy and on the rule of law. No one is above the law. You can hear this everyday in the U.S. Now it is a matter of making it true.
