Saturday evening, Walter Bos, as acting Prime Minister made telephone contact with Jasper Schuringa who, during the flight from Schiphol to Detroit, overpowered a man who tried to detonate an explosive.
On behalf of the Dutch government, Bos expressed his appreciation for the role Schuringa played, said a spokesman for the government Information Service this evening.
The 23-year-old Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab from Nigeria has in the meantime been indicted. He is suspected of wanting to blow up the plane during the flight.
Co-passenger Jasper Schuringa reacted immediately after an explosion occurred in the aircraft. By his account, he threw the burning object away and pulled the clothes off the Nigerian to ensure that there were no more explosives. Together with a crew member, Schuringa managed to overpower the man.
