The American-Israeli silence agreed upon after a 90-minute meeting at the White House between President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu does not bode well for the Palestinians. East Jerusalem is being Judaized in full swing, illegal settlements are being built and the Jerusalem Municipality even announced at the same time as the meeting that they approved the construction of new Israeli houses.
No one knows what took place in their meeting or what they agreed or disagreed on. This type of America-Israel meeting only takes place after a dispute between [the two countries]. These meetings usually appear on the surface to lean toward increased Arabic rights, usually in order to bolster America’s credibility. Palestinians know that the end results of these meetings are tragedy. They show a kind of systematic American retreat from all the pro-Arab positions that were declared — and are, by the way, consistent with international legitimacy and UN resolutions.
The retreat is carried out in a disciplined manner and guided by Israeli pressure on the U.S. government. It has the support of all the power elements of the Jewish lobby as well as its organizations and members of Congress from both parties who are friends of Israel.
We will know one way or the other what went on in this meeting, perhaps from Netanyahu himself, and perhaps soon. He was the one who advised members of Congress not to be enthusiastic about unrealistic solutions — and by that he of course means stopping the illegal settlement operations.
Then again, before this expected, organized, and disciplined U.S. retreat happens, the Palestinian-Palestinian conflict must come to an end. The Palestinians themselves must stand by each other to defend the supreme interests of the Palestinian people and their usurped rights. This won’t be achieved only by signing and activating an agreement by Hamas.
Once again, the situation is serious and time is no longer in favor of the Palestinians and their usurped rights in land and life. The whole world is no longer willing to tolerate this absurdness for long. The land was lost over sixty years ago, and what’s left of it is being lost now.
God helps those who help themselves.
