We are never finished with the Kennedy family. When it’s not Ted, it’s Bobby, and when it’s not JFK, it’s Jackie. We recently heard about a book from an American journalist affirming that Bobby Kennedy had had an affair with Jackie, the widow of the president (he is also said to have had an affair with Marilyn, like his older brother, which all comes close to pure and simple fabrication). Here is a book of Jackie’s confessions that risks making some noise.
In the months that followed John F. Kennedy’s assassination, Jackie confided for seven hours to a prominent American historian and close family friend, Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. These interviews were intended to be deposited in the archives of the Kennedy Library in Boston, which holds the public and private archives of the Kennedys.
These conversations, recorded during the spring of 1964, were part of an oral history project about the Kennedy administration. Jackie gave her version of the events that marked JFK’s three years as president: the presidential campaign of 1960-1961, the Cuban Missile Crisis, her role as wife of the president, as mother of Caroline and John, and JFK’s plans for his second term. This is the first time that John Kennedy’s presidency is revealed from the inside by his widow.
The book, which does not yet have a title, will be published by Hyperion in September 2011 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s election. It is Caroline Kennedy, Jackie and JFK’s daughter, who is working on her mother’s text. “She felt it was important to share her knowledge and excitement with future generations,” explained Caroline Kennedy.
Since the Kennedy saga endlessly fascinates, a television mini-series is in production. Joel Surnow, the producer of the show 24, will produce this history of the most famous American political family.
