The Arab League Welcomes Obama's Resolutions Regarding Palestine
The secretary of the Arab League, Amr Moussa, has welcomed President Obama’s statement on Thursday regarding the creation of an independent Palestinian state, calling on America to stay true to the words of President Obama and to work toward setting up an independent Palestinian state along the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Mr. Moussa stressed that the Palestinian issue was the “main cause of the instability in the Middle East,” pointing out that Palestinians’ recourse to international bodies to support their cause is a legal step, but that it is necessary to strike a balance when talking about the security of the different parties rather than focus only on Israel’s security.
Mr. Moussa also alluded to what Obama said in his statement on the uselessness of the nuclear arms race in the region, repeating his call for a nuclear-free Middle East.
He also praised the steps announced by U.S. President Barack Obama to support the Egyptian and Tunisian economies at this critical stage, including the U.S.’s call on the international community to participate in this project.
Mr. Moussa further pointed to Obama’s statement that “U.S. interests are closely linked to radical changes in the region,” stressing the need to seize this opportunity to “open a page based on new and fair policies in the relationship between the U.S. and the nations of the Middle East.”
