The Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Alí Jamenei, asked the United States this Thursday to “punish” the writers of a film considered insulting to Islam, which triggered a wave of protests in the Muslim world.
“If the American politicians are honest when they say that they have nothing to see (in movies, on television), then they must punish those, and their backup finances, who committed this hateful crime, to the greatest extent.
A little earlier, around 500 people demonstrated their concerns against the film, “Innocence of Muslims,” near the Swiss Embassy in Teheran, which represents American interests in the country, AFP confirmed.
The protesters carried Qurans and screamed, “Death to the United States” and “Death to Israel.”
“The number ones responsible for this crime are the Zionists and the American government,” the Supreme Leader affirmed.
In an attempt to pacify the situation, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned the video, calling it “disgusting and reprehensible” because “it appears to have a deeply cynical purpose: to denigrate a great religion and to provoke rage.”
“But as I said yesterday, there is no justification, none at all, for responding to this video with violence,” she added.
