On reaching Israel, Obama announced that the U.S. would always defend the Jewish state. Protest demonstrations were held in Palestine. President Obama said that for the U.S., its own important national security interests were linked to a well-secured Israel. The previous day Obama also met with the Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas.
In spite of raising slogans for Middle East peace, the U.S. is still unwilling to adopt a realistic policy toward Israel. For a long time now the world of Islam, particularly all those Arab countries that are directly affected by Israel, have been presenting demands to the U.N. and to Israel’s spiritual mentor, America, that Israel give up its obstinacy and evacuate areas it has occupied of the Middle Eastern state of Palestine. But despite Israel’s atrocities toward Palestinians, the U.S. has closed its eyes to Israel’s tyranny and obstinacy and is diverting Muslim countries and the Arab world with mere promises. Now even President Obama, who had made promises regarding recovery of Palestine’s occupied lands and for stopping construction of Jewish settlements in that land, appears to have fallen into the clutches of the Zionist lobby and been compelled to support Israel.
One wonders what role America intends to play in world politics and Middle East politics by offending the Arab world and the Islamic nations when it is clear that peace in the Middle East is possible only with the return of occupied Palestinian areas and stopping the construction of Jewish settlements by force in those areas. Obama needs to give assurances of protecting an independent state of Palestine, in the manner in which he has assured protection to Israel, to allow the dream of peace to be realized in the Middle East.
