Obama Is Weakening Himself

U.S. President Barack Obama’s announcement that he will increase the transparency of the American intelligence services is oxymoronic. The powers of the intelligence services come from operating clandestinely, not in the open. This [situation] is not going to change, either in Germany or among the inquisitive Americans. However, there is a pressing need for strict and clearly worded boundaries to limit the activities of these organizations. And an independent body must oversee these departments. If this balance fails to function convincingly, the talk must turn to democracy and its inherent values.

Obama reacted to heavy criticism, and he reacted too late. The impression is disastrous. The most powerful man in the word is chasing public opinion; in doing so, he weakens the presidency. He is allowing himself to be pushed along rather than actively shaping events. The people want to feel a sense of leadership and strength. Otherwise, they lose trust — even in Obama.
