The U.S. presidential election is an extended contest that begins a year before primary elections are held. As a result, changes in the political climate can be so gradual that the situation and atmosphere can change before one has realized. I feel this way with recent movements surrounding Trump.
House Speaker Paul Ryan, who had previously been reluctant to back Trump, declared his support and points of common interest with the GOP candidate. The race with Democratic candidate Clinton is close and, if the attitude of the Republican Party is really aligned with Trump’s pursuit of fighting establishment politics, this election campaign will be thrown into further turmoil.
On the other hand, President Obama has spoken against Trump’s remarks opposing the Japan-U.S. alliance. Even in uncertain times, the U.S. is able to provide protection through its alliances with other countries. How do Obama’s remarks to this effect relate to his stance on America no longer being the world’s policeman? I am eager to see the outcome of the clash between these ideas and the movement toward making America strong again.
