It seems the never-ending stream of revelations about the exploits of Trump the Lothario should finally bury his hopes for the White House. However, the latest national poll shows he’s behind Clinton by only four points, 43 percent to 47 percent. There are a few reasons for this. Among the reasons is the electorate’s general weariness from a crude campaign, the perpetual revelations about Hillary from WikiLeaks and, last but not least, Trump’s loud denial all accusations and attacks against his opponent on all fronts, including her health. Now Trump is insisting on a drug test for both candidates, because, in his opinion, before every speech, Hillary is pumped full of stimulants. It isn’t clear who is supposed to conduct this test, but that’s not really important at this point.
This is all very sad, since we do not hear practically any discussion of real problems, but only mutual insults, often going beyond all imaginable and unimaginable bounds. What’s more is, not only do U.S. citizens depend on the president for their safety and welfare, but so does the rest of the world as well. At least, that’s what many top American foreign policy wonks think, and they never tire of repeating the line about the exceptionalism and indispensability of the United States.
On Wednesday, Oct. 19,* the final debate will take place, where Trump is preparing to fight a final, decisive battle against Hillary. Very soon we will find out whether he will be able to change the course of history.
*Translator’s note: The original publication stated that the debate date was Oct. 20, which has been corrected to Oct. 19.
