The impeachment trial of Donald Trump was a risky electoral move that has blown up in the Democrats’ faces. Even if they weren’t able to dethrone him, their strategy was to poison public opinion against him. But according to Gallup polls, 53% of Americans were not in favor of the strategy.
Instead of resembling a criminal trial, the fiasco consolidated Trump’s position as the Republican presidential candidate for 2020. Not only did the Democrats ensure that the incumbent would be the Republican candidate even before the primaries, but with the impeachment trial, they also provoked a 4% increase in his popularity (to 49%). Currently, 63% of voters approve of how he is managing the economy. With these numbers, it will be quite tough for any Democratic candidate to challenge his reelection.

The Beijing summit did not produce a major agreement between the great powers on the region, but it firmly established that Middle Eastern crises are now deeply tied to the great-power dialogue.
During the Cold War, the United States occupied the apex of this triangular dynamic, pitting China and the USSR against each other. Today, it is Beijing that occupies that apex.

A summit that would normally send a reassuring message ... faces total uncertainty thanks to the weakness of the United States. The only person to blame for this is Trump.
