The U.S. vice president is not the only government official in the West who has grossly underestimated the issue of immigration. As a result, a crazy and addle-headed Donald Trump could move into the White House.
On this side of the Atlantic, it is almost impossible to understand why so many Americans want to elect Donald Trump. In recent weeks, the 78-year-old’s appearances have become crazier and more confused. He claimed this week that Kamala Harris is planning to ban meat. There will soon be “no more cows”! Before that, he was spreading the fairy-tale that immigrants are eating cats and dogs.
Such things don’t seem to hurt Trump any more than his erratic foreign policy positions. On the contrary, his approval ratings are now the best they have ever been, according to NBC. They are now higher than they were at any point during Trump’s term in office (2017-2021).
Trump Has a Chance Because He Addresses the Issue of Immigration
In Switzerland, which is not exactly a “radical leftist” country — a term Trump uses to describe his opponent — 73% say they would vote for Harris. Trump wouldn’t get a majority even among the base of the conservative Swiss People’s Party. That is the result of a poll by the Nebelspalter.*
But in the U.S., Trump has a real chance of being reelected, despite all his lies and his dictatorial behavior. (He rants about a “bloodbath” if he loses.) There are various reasons for this. One of the most important reasons is immigration.
Illegal immigration has increased since Trump left the White House in early 2021. Harris is in charge of this issue in the Biden administration. That makes her vulnerable, as we could see this week during an interview on Fox News. She delivered a strong performance, but she could not respond to a question about why she would permit immigrants without documentation to attend college for free and permit them to get a driver’s license.
Meanwhile, Biden and Harris have drastically ramped up their border policies, as reported by our colleague Natasha Hähni in Tijuana. The tightened policy amounts to an admission that there was a mistake. Harris recognized this too late.
European governments have also underestimated the explosive nature of illegal immigration for a long time. That explains Brexit and why the Alternative for Germany, the Freedom Party of Austria, and Marine Le Pen are winning elections. If Trump wins on Nov. 5, you will find a key reason for his victory on the southern border.
