With Shoes!
Wow... After all the hundreds of billions spent on media propaganda in order to falsify the reality of Iraq, who would have believed that Bush, "Iraq's alleged liberator," would receive the same retribution that Saddam Hussein received on the day U.S. forces entered Baghdad 5 years ago!
Do you remember the old Iraqi man who was screaming, shoe in hand, hitting a big picture of Saddam Hussein? It was a scene written and directed by American forces, like the toppling of Saddam's statue in Baghdad by U.S. troops.
Yesterday, on air, the American president, the president of the greatest nation on the face of the earth, received his deserved punishment, Iraqi style...with shoes!
At almost the same time, the Egyptian Parliament was discussing the issue of "the siege of Gaza." It was almost turned into a similar scene, but by God's grace it didn't. Although I would never exclude the possibility of something similar happening to an Egyptian political figure.
The dear reader asks, "Why?"
Let me tell you. The great psychological pressure exerted by dictatorial regimes on their opponents generates an explosion, and usually one that is uncontrolled and not governed by rules and regulations.
It is not possible for the man who has been oppressed to control his temper at the hour of the oppressor or his supporters.
Self-expression, and the demand for that right, is an unending issue. The moment that Bush thought his political life would end with the signing of the historic agreement in Iraq, this Iraqi citizen was of another opinion.
I am searching for the motivation that permitted this journalist to cover an important event like this with an important president like Bush. Why did he sacrifice these privileges in order to insult the president of the largest nation on the face of the earth on live television?
Did he not think about his future?
Did he not think about the punishment awaiting him?
He certainly must have. But the psychological pressure within him was stronger, and so he exploded. Such an explosion is likely to be repeated as long as there are forces exerting pressure.
When one is convinced that his high position, or post, is at the expense of his homeland and its dignity, then he does not think about the consequences but self-expression overwhelms.
While the press apologizes, or is compelled to apologize, the video and images will remain a measure of the times.
Bush, take this as punishment for your flat-out lies--with shoes on live television!
The great Bush has reached the end politically and morally. He will not harm the Iraqi journalist for what he did. For most he is unknown and insignificant, but Bush, and other significant figures, will be punished.
One might say correctly that this behavior is contrary to diplomatic custom.
This is true, but the journalist is not a diplomat, and if he were, then he should act like President Carter, who said frankly that conditions will improve in the world as the situation in the U.S. improves in the near future, referring to Bush's departure.
Even diplomacy does not prevent people from periodically expressing their anger and malcontent with their situations. Like what happened with former Wafdite delegate Talaat Ruslan, who assaulted the Interior Minister in the Egyptian Parliament in 1987. The Interior Minister Zaki Badr had made accusations to the left and right, until his tongue was so loose that he lost control, insulting and cursing famous Egyptians, an outburst that precipitated his resignation from office.
"Shoes" is a brazen expression, given as a nickname out of rage and feelings of injustice, when you are unable to even respond to what the paper gves as your opinion, when unable to just speak with officials, when unable to talk about issues of freedom, corruption, and occupation.
Bush will go down in history as an ignorant president, knowing nothing but what is written for him, famous for fighting two wars against two Muslim nations, creator of Guantanamo Bay, champion of totalitarian regimes, and a liar!
May the immortal image of Bush that will linger for coming generations be an American president being hit with a shoe on live television. And where? In Iraq.
