The Government of America Is Facing the Threat of Closure
Currently in negotiations, the Democratic and Republican Parties in Congress are at odds with each other over the amount to reduce the government budget. Government officials have warned that if the U.S. Congress is unable to agree to a final approved budget by midnight Friday, April 8, some parts of the U.S. government will cease their activities.
Barack Obama, the president of the United States of America, has warned members of Congress that if they do not reach an agreement on the federal budget, the U.S. economy will suffer.
The negotiations over the approval of a budget have been at an impasse in providing the cost structure of daily institution activities and the U.S. government’s organizations from Sept. 30 until the end of the current financial year.
Late Thursday night Barack Obama visited John Boehner, the speaker of the Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives, and Harry Reid, a U.S. Democratic senator. Democrats have proposed the U.S. budget be reduced by $33 billion, but some Republicans seek to reduce more than $60 billion in funds.
Obama, after an hour and a half long meeting in the White House, said that the discussions have been constructive in general and explicit. He said he has confidence that both parties are seeking to reach an agreement and neither wants to be blamed for the possible closure of government activities.
Since Oct. 1, the U.S. government has had to resort to collection measures in the interim regarding the budget for their everyday affairs. If negotiations do not result in an agreement by midnight Friday, parts of U.S. activities will be stopped. This will be the first time in 15 years that the U.S. government is going to “close.”
U.S. authorities say that in regards to the government’s considerable role in providing financial activities related to mortgages and housing loans, a closure of government activities will bring serious damage to the housing market in the United States.
Closure of American government activities means closure of government offices, which results in lost wages of workers and employees in the government and military; additionally, national parks and museums would be forced to close.
