The United Nations General Assembly has no reason not to support Palestine as a member on Sept. 20. The United States veto must not be accepted, because it breaks the promises that Barack Obama made during his speech in Egypt in 2009 and during the United Nations General Assembly in 2010.

“It is estimated that 2/3 members of United Nations support Palestine although they may change because of the pressure from United States and Israel. Indonesia as the leader of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), the pioneer of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), and the member of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) must take part in making sure the status of Palestine as a country,” said the Chairman of Commission I of the House of Representative Mahfudz Siddiq in his Sept. 17 press release.

According to Siddiq, Indonesia's stance on Palestine since the Soekarno era has been obvious. “This is the mandate of anti-colonialism. United States should be ashamed of the world if they keep vetoing the proposal of Palestine membership in United Nations,” he said.

Siddiq also mentioned that Obama, at the United Nations General Assembly in 2010, surprisingly mentioned that, “when we come back here next year, we can have an agreement that will lead to a new member of the United Nations — an independent, sovereign state of Palestine, living in peace with Israel.”

The United States planned veto shows that as a superpower, the U.S. is subjugated to the pressure of Israel. If they go through with the veto, the U.S. will lose its credibility as the champion of democracy, freedom and human rights.
