The Americans Know More
Is the independence of the judiciary violated by the decision to release the accused? Did the political overlap with the judicial in ending this case? Or did politics begin and end this case, using the court as a pawn all along?
Don’t worry about the release decision, for it is probably the correct “political” resolution to the indictment, which was also political. But you must be upset by the state continuing to use the court to settle political scores or to spark battles of a political nature — with underlying motives that have no relation to the law and are subject to negotiation, conversations behind closed doors and above- or under-the-table deals.
Note that the charges began as “administrative offenses,” and later became crimes of labor, treason, financing, and dividing the nation. These later charges sparked outcries from around the world, which bemoaned American penetration into Egypt, American endeavors to divide Egypt, maps that were seized and money that was paid to achieve these disastrous goals. Note that those accused of seeking to divide Egypt were released with fines. This sends the message to others attempting to divide Egypt that they too will get off with only a fine. But if you insult, for example, the marshal, you will find that a majority of parliament cuts you off; and if you shout in a demonstration, you may perhaps find yourself spending five years in a military prison.
Note also that the political parties in the military council, the government and the majority that carried the banner of charges and mobilized their followers, the media and trumpets, which fed on the speech to resist America and American agents — these are the same voices that have not spoken a word until now. These are the voices that bemoaned the loss of sovereignty and dug trenches in defense of the independence of the judiciary. Do you have an explanation for where they are now?
Do you think that part of the explanation lies in Sen. John McCain’s recent visit to Cairo? Look at what he officially announced even before looking for any hidden context. Linking the parties that McCain met with is the consensus of praises and views coming out of all of them. There is a further link between the departure of the accused Americans after several days and the silence during that exit of the parties [that McCain met with], despite the fact that they had filled the world with noise about sovereignty, genuflecting and infiltration.
Thus, the release of the Americans is a political decision that satisfies the military council, the government, and a parliamentary majority. Do you understand John McCain’s role with the three parties? Clearly, he granted each party what it wanted out of the transaction.
So what is the price for each of the parties? Everything will no doubt be revealed, for the Americans know more than they are letting on. It is enough to read the statements from members of the Senate praising the cooperation of the government, the field marshal, the leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood and the president of the parliament for resolving this crisis — as if to say to the people of the revolution, those authorized to carry out their desired results and those who were elected by those elected to complete those results: “We thank you for your good cooperation with us.” Now Washington finally knows that it does not have to mourn for Mubarak and his days!
