Who's Afraid of Michelle Obama?

Last week marks the return of the "other" Michelle Obama. She had disappeared over the past five years, but Republicans, who have nothing better to do, have brought her back to life.

Firstly, during the 2008 primary campaign, Barack Obama's staff had hid the future first lady. She's a powerful woman with clear-cut opinions who succeeded as an African-American woman. This scared a part of the electorate. The New Yorker has also mocked attempts by conservatives to present the Obamas at the White House. Michelle was shown resembling a Black Panthers activist on the magazine’s cover page — with an Afro, holding a machine gun.

Secondly, after Obama's election into office, Michelle became Barack's strongest asset. She’s beautiful, she wears dresses that expose her muscled arms, she’s the leader of Let's Move (a campaign for Americans to eat better and exercise) and she runs a campaign dedicated to ensuring that the families of the men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan are treated fairly by the nation.

Yet suddenly, all this changed on Tuesday, June 4. In the middle of a speech in Washington a gay rights activist interrupted the first lady, demanding that the president make an executive order forbidding discrimination by businesses. While the president is familiar with this type of interruption, usually waiting for the person to be escorted out, Michelle Obama chose to confront the activist.

The first lady stopped, turned to the perpetrator and said, “One of the things I don’t do well is this,” she explained. Addressing her interrupter, looking into her eyes, she added, “You can listen to me, or you can take the mic, but I’m leaving. You all decide. You have one choice.” After the incident, the public asked her to retake the stage.

This seemingly unimportant incident revived the angry black woman stereotype. It's as though racists of all sorts couldn't take it anymore and, after five years, ended up doing what they had refrained from doing for a long time.

Yet, Michelle Obama is completely the opposite of the stereotype and that is what aggravates conservatives. She, like all African-American women, must bear a burden unique to their racial identity. In spite of this, she has inspired a generation of young women. With her intelligence, strong character, elegance, humor and love for her family, Michelle Obama is revered as a first lady by millions around the world.
