Obama and Egypt: Whom Should I Support?
That is what happening inside Egypt. Abroad, in the U.S. in particular, positions are also carefully calculated, taking into consideration that Obama administration has been accused of being an invisible supporter to the “Muslim Brotherhood” in attaining power and that ambassador Ms. Anne Patterson is playing a very active role in supporting the “Muslim Brotherhood” authority. All this under the pretext of supporting the democratic election achieved through the casting of ballots. This position made the ambassador a target to the Egyptian opposition’s criticism and demonstration; in protest, they raised her photo in the squares.
Two days ago, Morsi’s supporters were jubilant with the news that President Obama had called President Morsi to show a kind of support for him and his legitimacy. That news confused the masses of people gathering in the squares, as well as the armed forces and the Ministry of the Interior, who are gradually leaning to support the opposition. Already, the judiciary, the media, the tourism industry, the cultural organizations and others came to the side of the opposition. It seems Washington had learned from past experiences and quickly clarified the content of the telephone call; the U.S. embassy in Cairo issued an announcement described as a readout of the president's call with President Morsi of Egypt.
The U.S. embassy stated that President Obama called President Morsi on Monday, July 1, to convey his concerns about recent developments in Egypt.
The announcement clarified to the audience the following points: “The president told President Morsi that the United States is committed to the democratic process in Egypt and does not support any single party or group. He stressed that democracy is about more than elections; it is also about ensuring that the voices of all Egyptians are heard and represented by their government, including the many Egyptians demonstrating throughout the country.”
Those words, from an official source, were composed to be clear and accurate — the purpose is obvious — it means to back down some steps, or may be many steps, from the “Muslim Brotherhood.” It could be Obama listened to a different advice this time; it certainly was not from the same sources that he used to listen to for the last two years.
