Adam Hofman, the spokesman of the conservative Law and Justice Party, appeared as a guest on Polish Radio Program 1. He commented on NATO’s reaction to the latest events in Ukraine.
“It is alarming that Germany and France strongly objected to a severe condemnation of Russian aggression,” he began. “We cannot allow the idea of security, whether through a strategic alliance with Germany or a reliance on NATO, to become less plausible and realistic,” added the spokesman.
Hofman admitted that he is anxious about the problems of the North Atlantic Council (NAC), which had difficulty in conveying “a clear message.” “The Council failed to follow article four which should be applied when one of the allies feels threatened. If Baltic countries do not have the right to feel threatened in such a situation, this is not positive information,” he said. Hofman also expressed hope that “Barack Obama will urge that some allies change their opinions on this matter.”
The politician pointed out that “having given away the atomic weapon, Ukraine agreed to give up the feeling of safety in exchange for the support of the United States; the Ukraine will eventually be deceived. This may affect similar contracts conducted by the United States in other parts of the world and make them less credible.” This was in reference to Ukraine’s action in 1994, when it removed nuclear weapons from its territory in return for the guarantee of its integrity and independence.
“Remember that Obama’s presidency expires soon, and therefore he will go down in history as defeated by Putin,” finished Hofman, referring to Putin’s lack of reaction to the U.S. president’s words.
