The United States suffered its biggest defeat in the history of the United Nations when it was crushed by an almost unanimous vote in favor of a new resolution to overturn Washington’s genocidal blockade of Cuba.
The U.S. government and, predictably, the Israeli regime, were the only nations to oppose the U.N. draft resolution, which was passed by an unprecedented 191 votes in favor, two against, and no abstentions.
Only Israel, America’s ally in war and murder, stood by the United States, whose “unhappy” representative in New York was unable to explain why the Obama administration still maintains its economic, commercial and financial blockade of Cuba, despite both countries having recently re-established diplomatic relations.
Washington was strongly criticized by many of the delegates, who emphatically refuted the frustrated policy of aggression implemented by successive White House administrations.
Cuban Foreign Affairs Minister Bruno Rodríguez explained that the normalization of relations between Cuba and the U.S. can only be achieved with the lifting of the blockade, which is currently still fully in force.
He emphasized that the commercial, economic and financial war against Cuba is effectively genocide, and that the blockade is the main obstacle to development for the Cuban people, who have suffered the consequences of their nearest neighbor’s hostile conduct for more than 50 years.
Challenged by Rodríguez not to misrepresent the truth, Washington’s U.N. delegate was unable to do so, and limited himself to reading a short statement without any content.
Rodríguez re-affirmed that Cuba will never renounce its principles and will continue to be at the forefront in solidarity, in the struggle for peace and just causes, and in opposition to wars and aggressions.
He emphasized that his compatriots would defend their sovereignty and independence without any surrender of principles and would continue on the same path in search of a better, fairer and more equitable socialism.
The United States government has no one but itself to blame for its overwhelming and historic defeat at the United Nations Assembly last week. Its imperial arrogance has blinded it to the reality that the United States no longer owns the world, not by a long shot.
Abstaining from the vote or simply leaving the U.N. headquarters would have been an elegant and intelligent compromise and one that could even have been construed as a gesture toward Cuba and the international community.
But successive presidents in the White House and their advisers continually fail to learn the lessons and, like the poorest students in the class, they fail to make the grade and wind up with egg on their faces.
With this latest defeat, the United States has once again made itself look foolish, but this time more than ever before in the history of the United Nations.
