Trump Crudely Scoffs Hillary Clinton. And Still Leads in the Polls.
The first direct confrontation between the two candidates leading in U.S. presidential polls. Donald Trump crudely scoffs Hillary Clinton ... and demands an apology from her.
“He is becoming ISIS’s best recruiter!” said Hillary Clinton during Saturday’s televised Democratic debate. She added that the fanatics of the Islamic State, the group that has created the caliphate in Iraq and Syria, are using Trump’s comments in their propaganda videos (for example, when he called for the shutdown of U.S. borders to all Muslims).
The billionaire who, according to polls, is most likely to be the Republican nominee, first responded on Twitter with a restraint that is unusual for him: “I demand an apology from Hillary Clinton for the disgusting story she made up about me for purposes of the debate.” But then, during a campaign rally in Michigan, he blasted away à la Trump.
“She lies about emails, she lies about Whitewater, she lies about everything,” Trump said. “There was never a video,” he tweeted.
He also commented on an incident from Saturday’s debate: During a commercial break, Mrs. Clinton went to the bathroom and failed to make it back to the stage on time. That is why ABC viewers saw her empty podium for a few seconds. He saw that she disappeared. “I know where she went, it’s disgusting. I don’t want to talk about it. No, it’s too disgusting!” lectured Trump. A moment later he criticized Clinton not only for her use of the bathroom [during the commercial] break, but for something much worse: In the 2008 primaries, she lost to Sen. Obama.
“I don’t know who would be worse … she was favored to win, but she got schlonged [by Obama],” said the billionaire.
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary says that "schlong" is usually used as slang; a vulgar term for "penis." This is the gentler translation of the word "schlong," which is what Trump used. In dictionaries of slang, for example, Urbandictionary.com, we find a much more obscene explanation of the word "schlonged."
Journalists and analysts commenting on U.S. politics in the media are once again scratching their heads and wondering how on earth did someone like Trump get 35 percent, or even 40 percent, according to some polls, of Republican support. Sometimes they also abandon civility. The right wing [publication] The Wall Street Journal published a comment made by Dave Shiflett, co-author of one of Trump’s books, who claims that, “he [the billionaire] acts as if he had been raised in a barn” and that he looks like “a manatee with a funny coif.” Shiflett also suggested that beautiful young women only cling to him because of his money.
Interestingly, according to many analysts, Trump’s polls are understated. He has much more support in online surveys. This may stem from the fact that when people talk on the phone with an interviewer, they are ashamed to admit their support for Trump. But when they are anonymously clicking on the Internet, they choose him. And they will probably do the same thing when they anonymously vote behind a curtain at the polling station.
One of the unfortunate, accidental victims of the new standards pioneered by Trump is Miss Puerto Rico, Destiny Vélez, who naively assumed she was allowed to do the same thing as the presidential candidate. She wrote on Twitter, “Jews nor Christians have terrorizing agendas in their sacred books. .. all what Muslims have done is provided oil & terrorize this country.” The crown was taken away from her after this offering. The beauty pageant organizers said: “Miss Velez's actions were in contradiction to the organization, and therefore as a consequence of her actions, she has been suspended indefinitely. The Miss Puerto Rico Organization will not tolerate any actions or behavior contrary to the Miss Puerto Rico Organization.” The Puerto Rican beauty has a right to be embittered — if Trump had quoted her words at a rally, they would not only have been tolerated, but they would have also provoked a long ovation.
