Vladimir Putin and President Obama Discuss the Situation in Ukraine and Syria
The leaders of the two nations agreed to further coordinate joint action in shaping the direction of the Syrian regime.
Today by telephone, Russian President Vladimir Putin and United States President Barack Obama sought a solution to the crisis in Eastern Ukraine and in Syria.
At the initiative of the Americans, a telephone conversation ensued between President Obama and President Putin. The leaders discussed the situation in Syria in detail, and, at the initiative of the Russians, reaffirmed both sides’ willingness to promote consolidation. The United States emphasized the need for cessation of hostilities in Syria, as well as providing humanitarian access to the areas in need, as reported by the Kremlin press service.
During his conversation with President Obama, Putin expressed hope that Ukraine will begin to take the necessary steps to implement the Minsk agreements, according to RIA Novosti.
Putin indicated that at the moment there is a pressing need to close cross-border communication between Syria and Turkey. Both presidents agreed to take additional measures to improve efficiency in responding to military actions in the zone of the Syrian conflict.
Both countries agreed to further increase coordination efforts in Syria including that of intelligence agencies and defense agencies. With this goal, additional measures will be implemented for expeditious responses to current violations of the ceasefire, according to the statement.
Also, both presidents stressed the significance of Syrian peace talks “which should contribute to finding a political solution to the conflict.”
A ceasefire has been in effect in Syria since Feb. 27. The truce does not apply to organizations currently banned in Russia and several other countries, such as the Islamic State, Nusra Front (a Syrian sect of al-Qaida), and other terrorist organizations.
