Laughing about Donald Trump Is Verboten
A beloved TV program is being discontinued in the U.S. The reason is supposedly financial in nature. But our author suspects that Donald Trump is behind the whole thing.
After 33 years, it’s over. The beloved “Late Show” with Stephen Colbert is being canceled in May 2026, without any replacement. The timing was rather unfortunate, just three days after Colbert criticized the station’s parent corporation, Paramount, for settling a legal case with Donald Trump for $16 million.
CBS is justifying the cancellation on financial grounds, saying that it has nothing to do with the show’s content. In other words, whatever we think that we can deduce based on our healthy power of reasoning is not true. That may be the case, but it still leaves behind a bitter aftertaste.
And a suspicion, namely that The Donald wants to be able to do whatever his “brothers” Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin or Recep Tayyip Erdoğa can do. A subservient media and no jokes about him. And definitely no disruptions from the satire corner, because they get really annoying with their ability to research; they’re funny; they don’t spread any — OK, hardly any — fake news; and they shamelessly reveal Donald’s deficiencies. Thank goodness!
Let’s hope that satire withstands the storm of the new “golden age.” And, if in the future, we have to go down into a basement to laugh, I’m almost positive that there will be a “BBS” down there! A “Big Beautiful Screen” on which we can happily watch the Colberts, Jon Stewarts, John Olivers, and whatever the rest of them are called on black humor-streaming channels.
