Impudence and Racism
In 1948, George McLaurin became the first Black man admitted to the University of Oklahoma in the United States. Although he was forced to sit in a corner away from his white classmates, his name remains on the honor list as one of the top three students in the university. He once said, "Some colleagues looked at me as if I were an animal, no one gave me a word, the teachers seemed like they weren't even there for me, nor did they always take my questions. But I dedicated myself so much that later, they started looking for me to give them explanations and clarify their questions."
I remembered this story while following the outrageous and bizarre remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump about Somalia and other poor countries. But what warmed my heart was the respectful response of Somali Defense Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi to Trump. Fiqi confirmed that Somalis will not accept being demeaned and that Trump should focus on fulfilling his pledge to American voters instead of preoccupying himself with Somalia. The Somali people are known throughout the world for their hard work and resilience in the face of adversity.
Trump continues to mock the world's peoples. At a rally in Pennsylvania, he condemned immigration from “Third World” countries, calling them filthy, dirty and crime-ridden. Then, he noted that the only thing they are good at is going after ships, referring to piracy off the Somali coast.
Trump, influenced by American movies, seeks to halt immigration from these countries, even though he is the son of immigrants himself. He has revoked millions of applications that were accepted during Joe Biden's era and deported those who do not provide added value to the United States.
At a massive rally, Trump escalated his racist rhetoric by insulting Biden with words that disparaged his mother, and described Islamic and African nations as “shitholes” and crime-ridden, confirming he does not want immigrants from these regions. Additionally, he called to increase immigration from European countries instead. This incites racism and targets Muslims and Black people.
Trump wants to drag the world back to the dark ages of abhorrent racism.
