Sept. 11 and Its Cost to Sports
Yesterday came the bitter 10th anniversary of one of the most severe explosions known to man, albeit much less the great volcano explosions, such as Krakatoa in the last century.
The events in New York have changed the world’s view of everything and brought about intentions and forces, threats and the classifying of the world into "with me or against me" to the degree that some consider that it must have been the purpose of a deeply laid plot. Therefore, today, our minds struggle with calmness and the repercussions of these events continue. Some people do not want them to stop for many motives which we cannot yet decipher.
By all humanitarian standards, the events that took place in New York were a catastrophe. Even this film will be affected and moved by the fire and unprecedented explosions. America reacted with madness, going to any extreme to comfort New York, the symbol of American Empire, the biggest city and center of the power of money and commerce.
Sports, an activity which engrosses three quarters of the world's population in this modern age, were not impervious to the events in New York. On the contrary, security measures for sports, which had been neglected in pre-disaster New York became tougher, more complex and more expensive. Before and during tournaments and youth sports gatherings, international sports organizations addressed these concerns, regarding the conditions of the hosting of any sporting event as very important, creating procedures for every detail of an event, including regulations for the athletes themselves. Many of these procedures are unnecessarily complex and designed to raise the cost of an event in the private sector. It controls organizations and forces them to accept the regulations, because they don't want it said that their tournament was not secure at the level required by international sports organizations.
More than that, the impact of Sept. 11 on sports limited the ability of other countries to hold sporting events that they had been capable of hosting until that dark day. Since the disaster in New York, the number of countries eligible to hold international sporting events are very limited, because of the American threat assessment and all because of the attacks on New York. Many Western thinkers consider that it is not merely a deeply laid plot like many events in the last century, but it takes a malicious interest in complicating the situation of U.S. interests and taking part in global strategies.
One glance is enough to see the millions needed to hold the championship, which are increasing to hundreds of millions. Just ask the Qataris about the 2006 Asian games in Doha and the Chinese about the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. They had gigantic budgets and were a burden on those countries.
