The Final Piece of the New World (Dis)Order

Many conspiracy theories are floating around about the "New World Order." These propagate the idea of a supposed oligarchy, made up of a group of the wealthy, political powers, and the secretive media, which have been taking control of the world for centuries now. The members of this "Order," so the theories say, have been moving the pieces of the global chess game, quietly and invisibly directing the great events of history. Whether these theories have any validity or not, we will never fully know.
What we do know, though, is that in the last few years, political movements have emerged with the goal of transforming the global society with which we are familiar, but nobody has been able to do so, until the appearance of COVID-19. The virus has triggered tension between the two most powerful nations, the United States and China. Trump accuses China of hiding information about the coronavirus that has hit the world with unprecedented ferocity and extreme growth rates.
In just a few weeks, the course of modern history is being dramatically and decisively changed. It is clear that global power needs to be reconfigured; this epidemic not only may kill millions, but it is also bringing the lethal by-product of an unprecedented world-wide recession.
The economies of powerful nations are falling, not to mention the fragile economic structures of small countries. Businesses are failing daily, and thousands of people have become unemployed. The transportation and tourism industries have been suspended indefinitely. No one knows exactly how much damage will have been inflicted once this pandemic ends, but the world will decidedly not be the same.
Each leader is managing the crisis according to her or his style, whether locally or nationally, and with the resources at hand — some making grave errors. Sooner or later, the terrible effects of the virus on the economy, public health, politics and society in general will be felt internationally, as a global community. We will need to find a way to fight on all of these fronts, together.
No nation, not even the United States —currently the most powerful nation in the world — can defeat the virus with an exclusively national tactic. The U.S. is not only the country most affected medically, but also the country whose economy is least stable as the virus runs its course. Paradoxically, the Chinese government now has affirmed that they have COVID-19 under control. In such a moment, a great power shift could occur, away from the United States and toward China. This could even signal the beginning of the end of the United States’ global supremacy.
And in the midst of the emergency, no doubt many nations will begin to voice the need to create an international body for crisis situations, which would be given extraordinary powers to be exercised as a sole source of command. [This], added to the strict rules that have been put in place by many countries around the world, which have provoked widespread fear that such restrictions will become normal, and that the control over individuals will increase.
Already, we’ve heard talk about the implantation of a chip, of controlling the spread of COVID-19 via telephones, and so on.
In the next few months, we will certainly see a reconfiguration of the most powerful nations in the world. Depending on how hard they have been hit by the crisis, they may either stay afloat or cede space to those which were able to better weather the storm. It wouldn’t be a surprise if a group of nations came together, and instead of a Group of 8 or a G20, we had a G10 which wanted to become the new saviors of the world.
