The Issue of Weapons Has Come to the Forefront*
*Editor’s note: On March 4, 2022, Russia enacted a law that criminalizes public opposition to, or independent news reporting about, the war in Ukraine. The law makes it a crime to call the war a “war” rather than a “special military operation” on social media or in a news article or broadcast. The law is understood to penalize any language that “discredits” Russia’s use of its military in Ukraine, calls for sanctions or protests Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It punishes anyone found to spread “false information” about the invasion with up to 15 years in prison.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that there was a possible “megadeal” looming with American leader Donald Trump. The White House is yet to comment on that. Meanwhile, the Western press is actively discussing further military supplies to Kyiv. Along with everything else, long-range missiles are once more on the table. Kommersant’s political analyst Dmitry Drize believes that further escalation of the conflict can’t be excluded.

The president of Ukraine discussed a “megadeal” with Donald Trump, code-named “drones in exchange for weapons.” The matter involves, first of all, the drones Kyiv uses directly on the front lines. Regarding American weapons, the list is quite long. It was given to the American administration back when Joe Biden was in charge. It’s unclear what the current head of the White House replied to that; perhaps he’ll tell us about it soon enough. The only thing we can say now is that “deal” is Trump’s favorite word. At the same time, the topic of supplying Ukraine with long-range missiles is, once more, being actively discussed. Even the famous BGM-109 Tomahawk is mentioned, with a range of up to 2,000 kilometers (about 1,243 miles). But we won’t dive deeply into technical details; we don’t have that much time. Anyone interested can study the matter on their own.
About a week ago, German Army Generalmajor Christian Freuding reported on the actual start of production of several hundred long-range missiles on Ukrainian territory, at German expense. Then, Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that he’s not excluding the possibility that these types of munitions will be supplied to Kyiv in the near future. At the same time, according to multiple sources, Berlin planned to purchase Typhon missile systems from America, which, by the way, can be used to launch the above-mentioned Tomahawks. This very fact in itself clearly proves Germany’s serious approach to its course for further militarization. But let’s return to Ukraine. At this moment, the matter is mostly about supplying them with MIM-104 Patriot systems. At least, the press talks a lot about that. And we get the impression that a lot of these systems will be sent.
So what is it all about? Trump, as we know, gave Russia 50 days to come to a peace deal. Clearly, these days will get especially heated in every sense of the word. To at least level the chances somehow, Kyiv must, logically, really receive new weapons in the shortest time possible. And no one can guarantee that those supplies will only include anti-missile systems; the media can probably be fed total disinformation. There’s no escaping that; it’s part of the information war. No matter who says what, the matter of weapon supplies has come to the forefront, unlike the matter of negotiations. Only the Russian side keeps saying that we all need a third round of negotiations. As we see, there is no particular reaction. Weapons are the talk of the town. The Western allies have gotten quite obsessed with them.
