A Clash Between the U.S. and Israel

Why did the Syrian minister of Foreign Affairs, Walid al-Moalem, abstain from the meeting of the Arab ministers of Foreign Affairs, held in the European capital? It is worth mentioning that this meeting pertained to the crystallization of a united Arab position, confirming their commitment to a comprehensive peace with Israel on the basis of the separation of the two countries and sticking to the Arab initiative. King Abdullah of Jordan will present will give the results of this meeting to U.S. President Obama when they will meet in Washington during the last week of this month.

In fact, did the Syrian Minister not attend the meeting because he was on a trip outside the country as stated in the speech given by the Jordanian minister of Foreign Affairs? Or does his absence reflect Damascus’ commitment to the position that President Bashar al-Assad introduced during the el-Doha Summit, where he requested to block the Arab initiative until Israel publicly accepts it? In this case, it is obvious that the Arab renew their adherence to the initiative.

Regardless of the reasons for the Syrian Minister’s absence from the Oman meeting, the Arab minister of Foreign Affairs confirmed during their meeting with the Jordanian king that they will continue with the Arab initiative, which represents a right step in the right direction. This is indeed the right step notwithstanding the reaction of the Benjamin Netanyahu government’s refusal to resume negotiations about Palestine and its opposition to the separation of the two countries as well as its omission of the declaration from Annapolis.

The White House was enraged, causing U.S. president Obama to give the Netanyahu government a clear warning by declaring that the U.S. strongly believes in a two-state solution and in the presence of a Palestinian country besides the Israel. Moreover, he declared that his special envoy, George Mitchell, will come to the region in order to advance this goal.

I think that the Arab’s announcement of blocking the Arab initiative in this timing could be a smoky cloud, behind which the position of Netanyahu government was disguised. This is the position that enraged the White House and hastened the possibilities of a certain clash with the Israeli government.

In fact, Netanyahu as well as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Avigdor Lieberman, kept silent. But both of them let the Israeli Minister of Environment declare that Israel does not take orders from Obama. Accordingly, the Israelis are so afraid that the stupidity of Netanyahu and his Minister of Foreign Affairs Lieberman will increase the chances of clashing with the new American administration and will harm Israel’s American interests.

The case is very serious, especially since American Jews extensively support Obama more than Benjamin Netanyahu and his new government, which officially confirmed the complete regression of Israel from the peace operation. Therefore, the majority of Israelis expect that the Netanyahu government will have the same destiny as his previous one when he entered into a powerful contest with former American President Clinton. Consequently, the Israelis fired him from the government because they preferred their relationship with the U.S.
