For the first time since his arrival on the political scene, Donald Trump is not the center of attention. It is a total eclipse owing to the crisis Joe Biden is trying to overcome.
Not only is no one talking anymore about the 45th president’s incoherent and violent remarks — a curious double standard — but even the French election failed to draw American media attention to the rise of a particularly conservative far right.
Barely hidden behind the conservative movement, the far right hopes to benefit from the recent ruling by the Supreme Court on the matter of presidential immunity.
Project 2025: Trump Is King!
For those who may not know about Project 2025, things are about to change. The Democrats are betting that its contents will repel voters, and the projects main advocates are now aggressively promoting the plan.
What is in this project? A mix of traditional conservative demands along with some far-right excesses.
Without specifying or defining exactly what the project is, its proponents want to do away with the deep state. At its heart, the strategy includes replacing 50,000 nonpartisan civil servants with those beholden to the president.
Well-placed at the top of the hierarchy, Donald Trump would consolidate power and become more authoritarian than any of his predecessors.
Severely criticized by the Global Project against Hate and Extremism, Project 2025 is also focused on Christian nationalism. No more and no less than faith over law.
Whether Americans support the civil service or not, they should read what the most radical conservatives are dreaming of delivering to Trump. This is well beyond the usual pitch about “trimming government fat.”
The Evolution of Presidential Powers
Beyond partisan politics, it is not the executive branch that should be the most powerful, but the legislative branch as the Founding Fathers saw it. Democratic and Republican presidents have helped push back the limits of their own authority since the beginning of the 20th century.
If Trump wins the 2024 election, it could mean the most significant evolution of those powers.
We must analyze Project 2025 in light of the recent Supreme Court decision on the issue of presidential immunity. Imagine a president applying a far-right formula with the knowledge that, acting within the scope of his official acts, he will not face prosecution.
There is a lot at stake in the upcoming presidential election and there is a lot to be pessimistic about regarding American democracy. Project 2025 hardly inspires optimism.
