Donald Trump: Fascist with a Public Service Announcement

The Republican presidential nominee declared that if he is reelected, he will fire Special Counsel Jack Smith. Isn’t that illegal? It doesn’t matter.

No one can claim they didn’t know about it any longer. It’s what you might call Donald Trump’s helpful public service mode. For months, it has been obvious that at least some of his strategists and advisers have been trying to persuade him to tone down his rhetoric, act a little nicer, and present himself as a candidate who respects the U.S. Constitution. But Trump will always be Trump. It’s just not in his nature to behave otherwise.

Now he has declared that he will fire Special Counsel Jack Smith “in two seconds” if he wins. Trump might just as well have said he was above the law, that he will strip the judiciary of its authority, fight the enemy within, and rule like a king two seconds after he takes office. Smith filed the two federal indictments charging Trump with crimes relating to Trump’s role in the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol, and his mishandling of classified documents. Legally, the president cannot directly fire the special counsel, since Smith reports to the Department of Justice. But Trump has made it known he has the solution to that problem. “We got immunity at the Supreme Court. It’s so easy,” he said.

Perhaps it is unfair to compare Trump with a king; unfair to kings, that is. After all, there are some jolly decent monarchs out there. The way Trump is talking, he sounds more like a fascist with a public service message.
