Migrants to the UN

The climate for dealing with the migration issue is not the best in Washington right now, considering the proximity to the midterm election and the way it affects the political agenda. The Hispanic community has congregated around several organizations that have been, along with institutions such as the California assembly, exerting pressure; however, it’s clear that the reform is in a quagmire. The objective is to freeze deportations, which have reached their highest point during the Obama administration.

The summit, which was held in Washington back when the number of migrant children surpassed predictions and flooded the available resources, will have a second chapter following the presentation on the great stage of the United Nations on the occasion of its General Assembly, in which the participation of the Honduran president was announced. He is to expose, among other things, “the interest of Honduras and of the Central American Northern Triangle in a comprehensive migratory reform for the United States, and in the U.S.’ voicing the fact that it is jointly responsible for solving issues not only on migration, but also in dignified, ordered, swift and humane repatriation, and helping us with reintegration programs,” said Secretary of Foreign Affairs Mireya Agüero.

This was the main topic of the Washington summit, in which the issue was given friendly and diplomatic treatment, but not much more. “President Obama was very careful not to offer anything concrete as the executive leader; what was there was the idea of making another, higher level reunion in September to present a portfolio of specific projects included in the Alianza para la Prosperidad (Coalition for Prosperity) project,” added the secretary, who made the statement when answering a question regarding the compliance with agreements made in that meeting.

The tension surrounding the migration issue worsened with the massive movement of children, some accompanied by family members but most given over to smugglers who then sent the children alone to turn themselves into border patrol, just meters from the border. The avalanche has reduced by more than 50 percent, after pointing out the danger faced by migrant minors and — most of all — after fighting the misleading open borders publicity campaign.

The problem of migration goes back to its source, where the basic needs of education, health, work and safety must be fulfilled to warrant the rights of children and their families. Joint responsibility must be what draws the line — a real compromise, not a promise, will be the starting point for diminishing and eliminating migration movements arising from violence, insecurity, organized crime or frustration.
