Reflections From Fidel: U.S. Wants Oil From Venezuela
Yesterday, I said what I would do if I were Venezuelan. I explained that the poor suffered most from natural disasters and the reasons why. I later added, "... where imperialism dominates and the opportunistic oligarchy gets more than a fair share of domestic goods and services, the masses have nothing to gain or lose and as a rule do not give a damn about the elections." In addition, "in the United States, even the presidential elections moved little more than 50 percent of those entitled to vote."
Now I would like to add that even when the same people are chosen, the entire House of Representatives, a part of the Senate and other important positions, voter turnout could not exceed that level.
I questioned why they employed their vast media resources to try to sink the Bolivarian revolutionary government in a sea of lies and slander. I arrived at the conclusion that what the Yankees want is the oil from Venezuela.
We have all seen the group of bastards elected these days, characters that, in the company of mercenaries from the local press, radio and television, come to deny even the freedom of the press in Venezuela.
The enemy achieved part of its purpose: to prevent the Bolivarian government from receiving the support of two-thirds of Parliament. The imperialists may think that they have won a great victory.
I think exactly the opposite: The results of Sept. 26 are a victory for the Bolivarian Revolution and its leader Hugo Chávez Frías. In these parliamentary elections, voter turnout rose to a record of 66.45 percent. The Empire with its vast resources could not prevent the PSUV, missing six per award, from electing 95 of the 165 members of Parliament. Most importantly, the incoming membership of that institution includes large numbers of youth, women and other militant activists. The Bolivarian Revolution is now in control of the executive branch, a large majority of Parliament and a party capable of mobilizing millions of fighters for socialism.
The United States has no more than fragments of parties in Venezuela, tacked together by the fear of revolution and coarse material desires. They may not resort to a coup in Venezuela as they did with Allende in Chile and other countries in Our America.
The armed forces of that sister country are educated in the spirit and example of the Liberator, which was incubated within the leaders who initiated the process, the instigators and part of the Revolution.
Such a set of forces is invincible. I would not see this with such clarity if not for the experiences of more than half a century.
