On Aug. 11, the executive secretary of the Network of Intellectuals and Artists in Defense of Humanity released a statement forcefully rejecting the aggressive escalation of the United States government against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. The U.S. has illegally offered a reward for information that could justify an attack against the integrity of the legitimate and constitutional president Nicolás Maduro.

In addition, the network condemns the unfounded, false accusations of U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, who seeks to connect Maduro — without any evidence — to criminal organizations linked to drug trafficking. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Iván Gil, for his part, has stated that, "the attorney general, instead of explaining her role in covering up Jeffrey Epstein's crimes (and Trump's complicity), is inventing a story against President Maduro and Venezuela worthy of being in a bad television series."

The network, founded in Mexico in 2003 on the initiative of Cuban and Mexican intellectuals — among whom Pablo González Casanova stands out — has numerous chapters throughout the world.

The network has taken on similar threats and violations of international legality, and it expresses its solidarity with President Maduro, with the people and the government of Venezuela. It supports the militancy and leadership of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, its communal and social power, as well as the entire sociopolitical fabric committed to building peace as the axis of international relations and a means to internal and external coexistence.

In its statement, it strongly repudiates all forms of interference, coercion and incitement to violence imposed on and promoted by the United States government and warns of a new offensive against the Bolivarian revolution in Venezuela.

Reportedly, in recent days several terrorist attacks were neutralized, among them one that was intended to take place in Plaza Venezuela in Caracas. Arsenals of weapons and explosives were discovered, meant to be used to create havoc.

Last Thursday, Aug. 14, Minister of Interior and Justice of Venezuela Diosdado Cabello announced the capture of 15 people, one of them in Colombian territory. In a press conference broadcast by the state network Venezolana de Televisión, Cabello indicated that state security officials had dismantled the plan after following up on a lead about a citizen who abandoned a bag allegedly containing explosives.

"I want to tell our people that despite those attempts they can feel tranquil, secure and certain that the national government is working tirelessly, and the state security agencies and our Bolivarian National Armed Forces are working tirelessly to guarantee the peace and the security of every Venezuelan."

Minister Cabello linked this alleged plan to the United States, as well as to the opposition leader María Corina Machado. In addition, he said that it was planned from Colombia but clarified that the government of President Gustavo Petro was not involved.

The Network in Defense of Humanity demands respect for international regulations that guarantee the sovereignty and self-determination of peoples as central elements of coexistence between countries and calls on all the peoples of the world — all the movements defending peace and human rights — to remain vigilant in the face of intelligence operations, cognitive warfare and the like used to generate disinformation and negatively influence public opinion about Venezuela.

To this must be added that there has been a recent deployment of the U.S. military in the Caribbean: 4,000 U.S. Marines, ships, submarines, missile launchers and planes, with the worn excuse that it represents "the fight against drug trafficking cartels,” now identified as "foreign terrorist groups.” And with direct threats against the Venezuelan government.

Faced with this, President Maduro said: "They launch imbecile accusations against me, against the military, against the political leaders of the revolution; they bring the differences we have — those differences we will have all our lives — to the sewer of the moral putrefaction of imperialism and its decadence in an effort to stain our ethics and our morals."

The network calls on regional organizations and peace-building bodies to guard the life of President Maduro as the best way to decisively defend peace in Venezuela and in the region. As a peace zone, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States in its Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean, reiterates that the anti-imperialist struggle in defense of Venezuela is an essential part of the battle for the peoples of our America.

It is essential that we support this appeal. Once again, one of the foundational tenets of the Network of Intellectuals and Artists is the defense of sovereignty and international legality.
