Trump and Ceaușescu: This Is How King Trump Wants To Immortalize Himself
Journalist Cristian Tudor Popescu compared the regime of President Donald Trump to Nicolae Ceaușescu’s dictatorship, sharply criticizing what he called “Ceaușescu’s America.”
“Those around my age still remember the old saying from back then: ‘Stay healthy, and see you in the States!’ In our minds the U.S. was some sort of paradise — of freedom for some, of abundance for others. At one point, I could have gone there through marriage. But I spent a night thinking about it — something beyond reason, a premonition, stopped me. Now, that premonition has become overwhelming, making me stare in disbelief at what lies across the ocean: nothing more, nothing less than Ceaușescu’s America,” Cristian Tudor Popescu, known as CTP, posted on Facebook.
The journalist went on to draw comparisons between the megalomaniacal gestures of the two leaders. Just as “the man from Scornicești demolished centuries of Bucharest’s history” to build the Palace of the People, Trump is “tearing pieces out of the centuries-old White House to make room for a 90,000-square-foot ballroom,” and across from the Lincoln Memorial, he wants to “erect the Arch of Trump — not of Triumph.” “This is how King Trump wants to immortalize himself,” the journalist wrote.
He also claimed that the U.S. president is building a personality cult that Ceaușescu borrowed from Stalin, but raised to new heights. “Surpassing Ceaușescu, Trump glorifies himself every 10 words: everything he does is ‘fantastic,’ ‘wonderful,’ ‘perfect,’ ‘damn beautiful,’ ‘unseen,’ and ‘unheard of.’”
CTP even scrutinized Trump’s foreign policy. CTP recalled how Ceaușescu once tried to obtain the Nobel Peace Prize through secret channels, and Trump personally made pressure calls, even going so far as annoying Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi because he didn’t rush to nominate him to the Oslo committee. Afterward, Trump retaliated against India with tariffs.
“Ceaușescu only had four grades of schooling, he was ungrammatical, uncultured, ignorant, unaware of Romanian and world history and culture, power-hungry, and endowed with the cunning of a wild dog leading a pack. Trump is uncultured, ignorant, indifferent to American and global history and culture, power-hungry, and endowed with the greedy cunning of a shady real estate hustler who has managed to escape unpunished,” Popescu wrote.
The conclusion was grim. “My mind can no longer find any escape route from this realization: In the United States, in Romania, across the world, humanity is rapidly degrading, in terrifying numbers.”
Former dictator Ceaușescu ruled Romania from 1965 to 1989. He was summarily executed on Dec. 25, 1989, in Târgoviște by those who took power after Dec. 22, 1989, including Ion Iliescu and Gelu Voican Voiculescu, an associate of the future president. Thirty-six years later, opinions remain divided. Some say that it was a revolution that led to the fall of the communist regime, while others argue it was a coup d’état.
