Fatal Consequences Threaten Europe
U.S. President Trump continues to disastrously undermine climate protection. He wants to do away with the legal basis for reducing carbon dioxide emissions, such as for vehicles or for fossil fuel power plants. Why this could also have dire consequences for Europe.
With his announcement dismantling of the central basis for climate protection in the United States, Donald Trump is once again denying man-made climate change, which countless internationally recognized studies have clearly demonstrated. He also denies that global warming is harmful to human health and the environment. He is once again sowing doubt about clear scientific findings and increasing ideologically driven, intellectual confusion, not only among his supporters but cynically and negligently with regard to all citizens whom Trump took an oath as president to protect.
As the world's largest economy, the United States would definitively abandon global climate protection and render the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement unattainable. After the Trump era, it may become more difficult to stop the acceleration of global warming.
If Trump successfully pushes his diabolical plan through and past all opposition, the consequences for Europe would be disastrous. So far, it has been the Europeans who want to stick to the Paris climate goals. While China has also shown a willingness to do so, it is questionable whether the Communist regime would hold to them under the changed circumstances in the race with the U.S. It has been in the interest of many companies to phase out of fossil fuel industries and transition to climate neutrality.
But in the short and medium term, with its stricter climate protection rules, Europe could fall behind in the battle among major economic blocs for global market share. It's no wonder that European industry, as demonstrated in the meeting with government leaders in Antwerp on Wednesday, is calling to relax the European emissions trading system. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (Christian Democratic Union of Germany) has long since been convinced; he also wants to push through a less ambitious climate protection program.
