The U.S. special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan — within the context of the suspicious activities of this country — has met with some officials in Afghanistan; the subject of these meetings has not as of yet been fully disclosed.

As reported by Al-Alam on Sunday, Mark Grossman has conducted these meetings with the aim of laying the groundwork for reconciliation between the government of Afghanistan and the Taliban following the successful opening of their offices in Qatar.

This is while operations by armed elements against foreign forces have increased in various regions of Afghanistan.

Despite the extreme cold of winter in Afghanistan, which causes a reduction in military operations, skirmishes between armed elements and Afghan forces have intensified and the reason for the intensification of the attacks is that these days, they are occurring against NATO forces.

Following the killing of four French soldiers and the wounding of at least 17 more people due to shots fired by an Afghan soldier, France threatened to withdraw its forces from Afghanistan prematurely.

This decision by France was announced by the defense minister of this country, who had gone to Eastern Afghanistan in order to visit French troops.

This decision has created a rift between Paris and Washington.

Mohammad Yasin Alemi, author and political analyst of Afghan issues, in an interview with the Al-Alam news network stated: “If France acts on its threat to prematurely withdraw its troops from Afghanistan, this issue will have effect on the status of other NATO member states present in Afghanistan who are looking to leave this country.”

With attention to the Taliban negotiations without the Afghan government communicating the details of these negotiations, if the security situation progresses contrary to the wishes of America, the relations between this country and Kabul will become even more strained.

According to observers, the U.S. special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan has held these meetings with Afghan officials in Kabul in a location far from the presence of the media.

Mohammad Pervez Safi, Afghan author and journalist, also in his interview with an Al-Alam network correspondent said: “Leaked information from Afghan President Hamid Karzai‘s visit with Grossman shows that Karzai has demanded that Afghanistan solve its own issues.

He explained: “The fate of reconciliation in Afghanistan without the participation of Afghans is doomed to fail and this issue has been proven in years past.”

Officials in Afghanistan have not concealed their concern that America might resort to new political games.

The threat of military conflict between foreign forces and armed groups runs contrary to the political activities of America, whose aim is solving the crisis in Afghanistan by any means possible with the minimum amount of damage. However, in this regard, the will of the Afghan people about what is going on around them is completely ignored.
