Out of everyone, the candidate who seems to have attracted the most interest is DeSantis, who is viewed as Trump's main competitor and who is expected to formally announce his intentions by May at the latest.

The lead-up to the 2024 U.S. election is fast approaching, in which aspiring Republican candidates are becoming increasingly obvious, and Democrats are debating President Joe Biden’s nomination.

For Republicans, the choice is simple yet varied: choose between former President Donald Trump, who has led the party to the right, or one of the handful of hopefuls who claim to be as or more "Trumpist" than he is, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and already declared challenger Nikki Haley, former governor and former ambassador to the United Nations.

Out of everyone, the candidate who seems to have attracted the most interest is DeSantis, who is viewed as Trump's main competitor and who is expected to formally announce his intentions by May at the latest.

Trump faces various potential problems, including what looks like an increasingly likely indictment in the state of Georgia for his attempts to interfere with, and change the results in, the 2020 presidential election. Not to mention the fact that many see him as a liability.

But after all this, he is still the dominant figure in the Republican presidential field. So much so that, for now, the only declared contender is Haley, who is of Indian origin and therefore a member of an ethnic minority, although for the moment she is considered marginal and a good potential vice presidential candidate.

On the Democratic side, President Joe Biden is an almost certain candidate, and all that remains is his announcement. But if the American political media are to be believed, many Democrats want him to leave the field open to a younger candidate.

Biden is 80 years old, and will be 82 at the end of 2024. He is already the oldest president in American history.

For Democrats, the dilemma is between loyalty to Biden and the need to look to the future. Yes, Biden is respected and appreciated, his government has been positive and has succeeded in avoiding a disaster for the Democrats in the 2022 congressional elections. But this only heightens concerns about his age.

In his favor is the fact that he is the man who has already managed to defeat Trump and keep the Republicans at bay, even though his party has lost its majority in the House of Representatives.

But until he formally declares, any member of his cabinet who expresses an interest in running will be seen as ungrateful, and any legislator who seeks to do so will face accusations of divisiveness.

On the other hand, if the American political media are to be believed, many Democrats expect — although it’s unspoken — Biden to refrain from running.

The 2024 U.S. presidential campaign looks to be a divisive one, with an agenda that includes border control, drug trafficking, the economy and moral and ethical values.

And also, a new definition of America's relationship with the world.
