Bitter Tea
Tea, the most civilized beverage, is becoming sour for the United States.
If anyone doubted the value of symbols, the current American situation gives ample food for thought. Everything originates from the Boston Tea Party, which occurred in Boston in 1773. The English Crown sought to collect taxes on imported tea, but before they could make it effective, the colonists were in an uproar. At the peak, the rioters broke into the boats and threw the bags into the bay, thus baptizing the famous event. The slogan of the times was “No taxation without representation,” emphasizing that the American Revolution was largely against taxation. Since then, the DNA of the WASP contains a primitive opposition to taxes and, by extension, the federal government that collects and spends.
Cut to 2009. President Obama received a collapsing economy and was forced to throw in a rescue package, whose amount is substantial only in appearance. Obama also addressed a very moderate reform for the national health system. Who said to be afraid? Immediately, the far-right populist parties took the initiative to stage tea parties everywhere, in which they paint Obama as the black Hitler. The idea is to cause a tsunami that would paralyze the administration and terrify the country even more. They don't give a damn that ignoring the banking crisis would have resulted in an incalculable economic depression, or about the country paying higher costs for health care that, on average, is only mediocre, leaving more than 40 million Americans without health insurance. Those from the bitter tea party understand that there is something more basic than reality, and that is the devastatingly strong force of collective anger.
U.S. policy is becoming increasingly more rough and dirty. This happens, in my opinion, because so many WASPs are in great fear of the future. One thing is certain. This will not look like the past — the golden age of the immediate post war years — when the so-called American dream crystallized: family, church, house in the suburbs, car, army, empire. The WASP has been in power for more than half of U.S. history, with brief and timid eclipses. But given the demographics, they fear, with much paranoia, the rising tide of mestizos, blacks and Latinos, and that is why they refuse to allow the State to give them hope for a better life. Now, add that everything is "Made in China" and the price of gasoline climbs even in bad times, and you have a recipe for the growing apocalyptic temptations that prevail in the country. The paradox is that perhaps nothing other than disaster, which was about to occur in 2009, may soften the WASPs and make them see reason, meaning that it will make them accept a mixed civilization in which compromise prevails.
The opposite can also happen. Do not forget that the second amendment in the United States gives every adult the inalienable right to be armed. Accordingly, the time for American tea can result in a terrifying situation. Once again, I hope to be wrong.
