Michelle Obama: a Strong First Lady
In comparison with her husband, Michelle Obama is a skilled speaker and lawyer committed to social matters. But she is also regarded as more down-to-earth and is said to plan her life carefully, step by step.
Michelle Obama (44) will join in to make history when she overtakes the White House as the USA´s first Afro-American presidents wife.
Until her husband stood for presidency, she had had her own career to pursue. Among others she was executive director of the University of Chicago Medical Center. Now she has informed us that her priority is to be a mother for daughters Malia (10) and Sasha (7).
She has also promised to work on behalf of the families of American soldiers and officers, an activity she began during the election fight.
South Side
Michelle Obama was brought up in Chicagos South Side in the 1960s, during the period of the fight for civil liberties in the USA. She had good results at school and after a while received a scholarship to study law at Harvard where she met her future husband.
Since she is regarded down-to-earth and practical, it does her credit that her husband has remained close to people´s reality throughout the campaign. Barack Obama describes her as a rock, a source of power and a constructive critic.
In addition to her performance as a strong mother and spouse she was also praised for her good taste in clothing which took her to the cover of fashion magazine Vogue.
Unpatriotic?
Despite the fact that she does not like to stand out, she has given speeches several times under the election fight, speeches that were welcomed with great applause. When Barack Obama travelled to his ailing grandmother in Hawaii, she covered for her husband on two election meetings.
Meanwhile she has also become famous for committing a faux pas on one election meeting in Ferbruary when she said that for the first time in her adult life she had became really proud of her country. This led her to be marked as unpatriotic.
The blunder has made Michelle Obama proceed with more caution through the election fight. Now she can say again that she is proud of her land, without receiving criticism.
When she moves into the White House, she is going to become an important symbol of the American dream, which still can become a reality.
